How Data Centers Are Becoming Greener

Everything is easy when you surf the web completely forget the impact this may have on the environment. Instinctively we know that is greener to get some information online that leads to the library, for example, but that's partly because we tend to think of the Internet as something supernatural, no physical basis and therefore no tangible effect on the environment. However, all the data they see on the Web is stored somewhere in your life, and most of the servers in large data centers, unfortunately, has a significant impact on the environment.

Report in 2007 found that information technology and communication (ICT) represents 2% of global emissions of harmful gases into the data centers, in turn, blame the 14% of this figure. As Internet use and commerce of digital information grows - and especially the concept of cloud computing continues to take off with our data is stored remotely "in the cloud" (ie supplier network servers large) for us to access anytime anywhere - demand for data centers are increasingly abundant. Providers therefore constantly looking for solutions and innovations to become more efficient to meet the twin goals of reducing their costs while reducing their environmental impact untenable.

All data centers are part of two important elements that each offer a variety of opportunities for economic and environmental efficiency. The first is the actual IT equipment. providing material core function and purpose of a facility, such as servers and network switches serve. The second is the infrastructure required to house the equipment and keep it running efficiently and safely. The infrastructure can be formed by cooling equipment, safety devices, lighting, etc.

The relationship between the energy consumed in the data center infrastructure to the energy used to drive the IT equipment is known as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and is the industry standard for measuring the efficiency. A PUE rating of 2, for example, would mean that for every unit of energy consumed by IT equipment for a unit was consumed by the infrastructure.

Renewable Energy
The first step to becoming a greener data center can be sure that the source of energy or electricity used is renewable. This can be achieved either associated exclusively with renewable energy provider or power supply directly through sustainable methods. Some vendors go so far as placement of solar farms in the area to get the energy they need.

Energy Control
It is also important to have accurate and detailed monitoring of energy consumption at each point in the data center, so that further efficiencies can be observed. Most providers have monitoring to calculate PUE score, but the accuracy of this monitoring and distribution of energy between IT equipment and infrastructure can potentially vary slightly from center to another.
